Funeral services for Ardell M. Couchman, 83, of Davenport, will be 10a.m. Friday, February 14, 2020 at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 until 7p.m. at the funeral home. There will be additional visitation from 9 until the time of the service. Memorials may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Ardell died Sunday, February 9, 2020 at ManorCare, Utica Ridge, Davenport.
Ardell Mae Libberton was born on December 31, 1936 in Clinton, a daughter of Guy and Pauline (Gerten) Libberton. Her dad was in the Navy and his career took Ardell and her two sisters to many places. Her first marriage to an Air Force pilot continued to take her around the United States and the world including Hawaii, England, Scotland, Denmark, Thailand and Spain.
She graduated from Fulton High School, attended Gradwohl School of Laboratory Tech in St. Louis and later worked for the Social Security Administration. Moving to Davenport in 1978, Ardell lived with her sister Helen and began working for Dr. Don Doering, retiring from his office in 1985. While working there she met Rex Couchman and they were married on November 16, 1979 at First Presbyterian Church, Davenport. They were avid travelers, visiting her son in Germany and experiencing Europe together. She and Rex also traveled the entire United States in their 40 year marriage visiting every state capital. He preceded her in death on July 14, 2019.
Ardell loved her large blended family. She enjoyed her life and had many hobbies. In the past she consistently bowled a perfect game, played cutthroat mahjong, and always had a good book to read. One of her favorite memories was sewingwith her mother who was an excellent seamstress.
Survivors include her son: Steven (Cathy) Lacina, Gladbrook, Iowa; step-children: Neila Wheeler, Dennis (Opal) Couchman, all of Davenport; Becky (John) Cain, Des Moines; Steve (Molly) Couchman, Las Vegas; Lori (Todd Stuhr) Leamer, Lowden, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren with 1 on the way; and one great-great grandchild; a sister, Helen House, Davenport, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Marvin (Jane) Couchman, Moravia, Iowa; Donna (Bill) Bryan, Dallas, Texas; Danny (Rosemary) Couchman, Bettendorf; Richard (Betty) Couchman, Sewal, Iowa; and Larry (Lesa) Munden, Lancaster, California.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Dave Wheeler; an infant great-granddaughter, Carissa Wells; her parents; and a sister, Barbara Johns.
