Alice Gray, 88, died peacefully at home on April 16, 2025. She was known for her generous spirit, her love of sewing and quilting and her devotion to God. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 AM on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries in Davenport, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery.
Alice grew up on farms in Nebraska and lived briefly in California, where her father worked at the shipyards during World War II, before settling in Davenport after graduating from high school. That little girl with an outhouse became the woman who took modeling classes and traveled the world, living in Russia as a missionary for one year with her husband, Verne, during retirement, visiting her children and grandchildren in South America, and enjoying high tea in London.
Many considered Alice to be their dear friend, and she loved hosting Bible studies, where she would share excitedly all she learned about topics like the tabernacle and heaven. She was known for her enthusiasm, whether she was making extra waffles for breakfast just in case, sending people out the door with an armful of goodies or buying extra books so everyone would have a copy. But few things brought her more joy than making quilts for special occasions, so people would know they were loved.
Alice is survived by her children Tom Gray, Valerie (David) Becker, Vicki (Ron) Teel, Stephen (Becky) Gray and Susan Gray Blue (Micheal Capozzola) and deeply loved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Verne Rex Gray, Jr.; her parents, Victor and Ethel Plunkett; and her brother, Victor Plunkett, Jr.
