A time to celebrate the life of Alfred L. Gatewood, Sr, 89, of Davenport, will be 5-6pm, Friday, April 30, 2021 at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, downtown Davenport. Keeping with his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. Memorials may be made to the family.
Mr. Gatewood passed away Friday, April 23, 2021 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.
Alfred Leonard Gatewood was born on July 15, 1931 in Des Moines, Iowa, a son of Jesse (May) and Leonard Gatewood. He was an excellent athlete and was a four-time state track champion. Winning state championships in the 440-yard relay, 880-yard relay, 60-yard hurdles and high jump at Des Moines East High School. Along with being a state champion in track while at East, he excelled in football and was named All-Conference and All-City. He graduated from East in 1950 and continued his track career at Iowa State.
Alfred was an auto mechanic for Clark Auto before his retirement in the 1990’s. He had been married to Patricia Boyd and Patty Wells. They preceded him in death.
Alfred enjoyed fishing, hanging out with friends and adored his grandchildren
Survivors include his children: Royal (Kim) Wells, Georgia, Weena (Dennis) Gibbs, Anita Wells, Alfred Gatewood, Jr., Joan Thomas, and Chontea (Julian) Young, all of Davenport; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a great-great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Gatewood was preceded in death by children April and Elmer, his parents, and siblings: Edward and Teddy Gatewood, Darlene Wade, and Carolyn “Cat” Smith.
